Oneness is not a metaphysical idea but something essential and ordinary. It is in every breath, in the wing-beat of every butterfly, in every piece of garbage left on city streets. A typical feature of shamans is their familiarity with states of consciousness that allow visions and explorations of other dimensions. Their primary function is to navigate from one reality to another in order to operate as bridges and create healing connections. There are many dimensions and worlds, which in our separate reality are totally unknown.

From the perspective of life’s oneness, there is no separation, no hierarchy, and no ladder of ascent; rather there are patterns of interconnection and movements of energy. Energy forms into matter or constellates into images. Life expresses itself in so many ways, each mode having its purpose and meaning, each aspect of creation reflecting the whole in a unique way. The relationship of the one to the many, of the individual to the whole, will be the science of the future. Our understanding of the way energy moves between different levels of reality will give us access to a ruler understanding of life and how to work with life’s energy. 

Science has shown us that the world is not the solid, three dimensional reality that our senses imagine. As we awaken to the ways energy moves between different levels of reality, we will begin to perceive how our consciousness affects the whole, how our perception determines our experience.

On its own, a tree cannot establish a consistent local climate. It is at the mercy of wind and weather. But together, many trees create an ecosystem that moderates extremes of heat and cold, stores a great deal of water, and generates a great deal of humidity. And, in this protected environment, trees can live to be very old.

What should be our response to the generosity of the more-than-human world? In a world that gives us maple syrup, spotted salamanders, and sand hill cranes, shouldn’t we at least pay attention? Paying attention is an ongoing act of reciprocity, the gift that keeps on giving, in which attention generates wonder, which generates more attention—and more joy. Paying attention to the more-than-human world doesn’t lead only to amazement; it leads also to acknowledgment of pain. Open and attentive, we see and feel equally the beauty and the wounds, the old growth and the clear-cut, the mountain and the mine. Paying attention to suffering sharpens our ability to respond. To be responsible.
