We must move from a belief-based spirituality to a practice-based spirituality, or little will change in religion, politics, and the world.

There was a time when the distances between our world and those we considered “imaginary” were no further than a bend in the road. Each cavern and hollow tree was a doorway to another world. Humans recognized life in all things. The streams sang and the winds whispered ancient words into the ears of whomever would listen. Every blade of grass and flower had a tale to tell…There was life and purpose in all things and there was loving interaction between the worlds.

We are always part of something, belonging to a greater wholeness. In fact, we always stand deeply connected with the entire world around us…Nothing can thrive in seclusion. We all depend on each other and we are nurtured in the web of connectedness—organically and in consciousness.

We are attendants at the wake of the old way, and each of us – through our actions, our thoughts, our work and relationships – is midwifing a new world into existence. This is our destiny, our meaning, our purpose …

We are like dawn, you and I, like light breaking into the world. Alone we are only a flicker, a promise not a reality, but when joined with others, when combined with the bright hope of millions, we roll back the night like a carpet, flooding the sleeping world with a new day, a new beginning.

Reality is woven from strange, “holistic” threads that aren’t located precisely in space or time. Tug on a dangling loose end from this fabric of reality, and the whole cloth twitches, instantly, throughout all space and time…The bottom line is that physical reality is connected in ways we’re just beginning to understand…When you drill down into the core of even the most solid-looking material, separateness dissolves.

We should never underestimate the power of kindness to positively affect our world. Simple kindness is a powerful spiritual force. If we had more of it in the world, we could transform society into a manifestation of compassion, and that would truly be a blessing!

It isn’t always easy to hold on, especially when the world keeps spinning, but it is easier if we hang on together. That way we are connected, linked together, and stronger than any one of us could ever be alone. It does not matter that we are from different backgrounds or different faiths: what matters is that we care with and for one another. The unraveling of reality only occurs when we let go, let go of our hope and our vision. When we hold on to what we believe, our diversity becomes a bond that cannot be broken. So if you feel like you are hanging on, you are, but never alone. Thousands of us are holding on with you.

So people say, “How can I grow spiritually?” It’s so simple that it’s overlooked all the time. It’s a decision to be loving and kind toward all life, including your own, at all times, no matter what. To be forgiving, to be gentle, to be that which is supportive of life. So that becomes not what you do, but what you are.

Even a wounded world is feeding us. Even a wounded world holds us, giving us moments of wonder and joy. I choose joy over despair. Not because I have my head in the sand, but because joy is what the earth gives me daily and I must return the gift.

…May we re-imagine Earth as a living being. Please, may we know once again that Spirit fills the land, that the land is sacred. May we conjure a future in which our relationship with the Earth and her creatures is once again celebrated in stories and honored in ceremonies. May we affectionately attend to the voices of our own inner wildness as we fiercely tend the outer wildness around us to which we belong. That we, that she, might never be lonely again.
