Earth is not a platform for human life. It’s a living being. We’re not on it but part of it. Its health is our health.

In many respects, plant nervous systems are nearly as sophisticated as our own, and in some plants, nearly as rapid in their actions. Plant nervous systems possess synapses, just as our brains do, and they make and use neurotransmitters that are molecularly identical to those that are found in our brains. They use these neurotransmitters to facilitate the function of their central nervous system, just as we do.

the mind and heart are like two different radio stations. When you tune to the heart station, your attitude shifts and you look for responses that are better suited for the wholeness of the situation. The mind becomes a big winner in the process. It actually becomes more rational. Heart intelligence provides the mind with a bigger picture that allows it to consider what is best for oneself while being more inclusive of the wholeness.

Active Hope is a practice. Like tai chi or gardening, it is something we do rather than have. It is a process we can apply to any situation, and it involves three key steps. First, we take a clear view of reality; second, we identify what we hope for in terms of the direction we’d like things to move in or the values we’d like to see expressed; and third, we take steps to move ourselves or our situation in that direction.

If the world is to be healed through human efforts, I am convinced it will be by ordinary people, people whose love for this life is even greater than their fear. People who can open to the web of life that called us into being.

Research has shown that “ the heart possessed its own complex intrinsic nervous system that acts as a brain and functions independently from the brain in the head…There is evidence that the hearts brain possesses the capacity to learn, and even has short and long-term memory, and neural plasticity.”

The earth community, the Life Community, is not the property of any one religion or group or part of the world; it is the Commons that embraces us all, our planetary home. And it needs us as never before. It calls to us to become, not heroes but community builders, builders of home, gatherers and embracers, bearers of hospitality, keepers of the shared space that nurtures us all. It calls us not to go forth and come back laden with honors but to honor where we are, who we are, and from that place to reach out to connect to and honor each other in the community of life.

This new era requires a change of consciousness and values – an expansion of our worldviews and ethics. The evolutionary life impulse moves us forward from viewing ourselves as isolated individuals and competing nation states to realizing our collective presence as a species with a common origin story and shared destiny.

If we can have a holistic view of soil, soul and society, if we can understand the interdependence of all living beings, and understand that all living creatures from trees to worms to humans depend on each other, then we can live in harmony with ourselves, with other people and with nature.
