While it might seem that increased compassion would become a source of discomfort, it is actually soothing, like the soft ripples of current created when you drop a pebble into a lake. Ever-widening, the ripples steadily become larger circles, expanding until the energy from them disperses. Eventually, the movement that began in response to the pebble appears as water lapping on some distant shore. Compassion has a similar capacity: it expands as far as we are willing to allow it, creating ever-widening circles of awareness within and between individuals.

Participatory consciousness emerges in relationship with an animate world, an ensouled universe with both a past and an unfolding future. Rivers and mountains, galaxies and microbes are physical and psychic presences with their own stories and longings. I believe that Thomas Berry not only expressed participatory consciousness, but that he helped evoke it in others, and that this evocation was one of his finest gifts to Earth and to the human species.

In our efforts to preserve life and diversity in an egocentric world, our mature anger – in addition to our love – can be one of our greatest resources. Mature anger is part of a healthy reaction to the actions of people in power that cause suffering, death, and extinction for so many individuals, species, and human traditions and languages. This includes anger at ourselves for our complicity, in either minor or major ways. Anger of this kind promotes clarity and motivates constructive and corrective action, as well as compassion for those who are suffering. Mature anger – entirely distinct from hatred – derives, as Tibetan Buddhists say, “straight from the heart of pure compassion.”

The mystery of the divine feminine speaks to us from within her creation. She is not a distant god in heaven, but a presence that is here with us, needing our response. She is the divine returning to claim her creation, the real wonder of what it means to be alive. We have forgotten her, just as we have forgotten so much of what is sacred, and yet she is always part of us.
But now she needs to be known again, not just as a myth, as a spiritual image, but as something that belongs to the blood and the breath. She can awaken us to an expectancy in the air, to an ancient memory coming alive in a new way. She can help us to give birth to the divine that is within us, to the ONENESS that is all around us. She can help us to remember our real nature.
